Advanced Cellular IoT Module for ZPA Smart Energy Meters
As part of a national AMI rollout in the Czech Republic, PySENSE developed a dedicated LTE-M and NB-IoT communication module for energy meters provided by ZPA Smart Energy, a major European smart metering company.
One of the core project requirements was support for cellular IoT protocols (LTE-M and NB-IoT) and full implementation of the DLMS Security Suite 2, enabling the use of Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) to secure all aspects of communication, authentication, and authorization—both with the Head-End System (HES) and with utility personnel.
Built on PySENSE’s modular RTOS platform, the solution is fully integrated with ZPA’s AMx75 meter family, providing native communication and configuration exclusively via the DLMS/COSEM protocol, without any additional management interfaces. This ensures a clean, secure, and standardized approach to remote management.
An integrated supercapacitor enables the sending of Last Gasp messages—critical alerts triggered during unexpected power outages—and protects the system’s internal power supply from sudden voltage drops.
Thanks to close collaboration with ZPA Smart Energy, we delivered a cutting-edge smart metering solution that combines cellular IoT communication with advanced security mechanisms—including full DLMS Security Suite 2 support. This type of integration remains a rare achievement on the global market, offering both performance and compliance with the highest security standards.
